Male’, MALDIVES - The governing body of world football, FIFA has called off the extra ordinary congress to be held on March 15 by Victory Sports Club to have a no confidence motion against the current leadership of Football Association of Maldives.

In a press conference held this afternoon at FAM House, on behalf of the fact-finding mission, Alexander Gross, the senior manager for member associations’ governance department at FIFA, calls off the extraordinary congress.

He said that the signed petition from the clubs to remove the current leadership of Football Association of Maldives (FAM), in order to conduct an extraordinary congress cannot move forward as it fails to meet the necessary requirement.

According to Article 29 of FAM statutes, if more than 50% of members of FAM makes a written request to hold an extraordinary congress, and an extraordinary congress shall be held within fourteen days of receipt of the request.

Gross said that he and the officials from AFC had conducted meetings with almost all the clubs from the first, second and third division. And also he said that they have met with almost all the clubs who have signed the petition in order to conduct an extraordinary congress.

“My colleagues from FIFA and AFC, have been able to meet with the clubs from the first, second and third division. We have met with almost all of the clubs who have signed the petition in order to extraordinary congress.” He said.

“We have spoken to the clubs that have signed this petition, we have spoken to some clubs that didn’t sign it and also the clubs who signed this petition but withdrew from this petition at a later stage.” He added.

“The conclusion we have come to today is that as of today the requirement of over 50% which is required in order to convene an extraordinary congress is not met. I repeat that the requirement has not been met.” He said.

It is not clear which member clubs have agreed to call for an extraordinary congress but four of the clubs took their name from the petition.

Then, the president of FAM, Bassam Adeel Jaleel concluded by saying that, after the talks carried out by FIFA and AFC with the clubs in the Maldives, he’s glad that the ongoing problems have come to an end and answered all the questions regarding the issues, and it’s time to focus on the upcoming football season.

The officials from the governing body of world football, FIFA and the governing body of Asian football, AFC are expected to return back to Kuala Lumpur and Zurich, tomorrow and Thursday morning respectively.
