Palembang, INDONESIA - South Korea beat the Maldives by 8-0 in their women's football match at the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia on Sunday and confirmed a place in the second round of the tournament.
Maldives started the match without skipper Fadhuwa Zahir due to an injury suffered against Indonesia in the opening match of the Asian Games. Maldives lost that match to host nation by 6-0.
Maldives played very well in the first 30 minutes of the game. South Korea, who finished fifth in the women's Asian Cup and qualified for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup managed to score just four goals in the first half.
South Korean ladies have yet to win a gold medal in women's football at the Asian Games.
South Korea scored 13 goals against the Maldives in the 2014 Asian Games. In 2014, Maldives conceded 38 goals from 3 matches and so far in the year they conceded 14 goals in two games.
Maldives will play against Chinese Taipei on Tuesday in the last game in then group stage.
